Ride Report & Photos
Torrachilty ride 4th March 2012
Thanks to all the Forestry folk, particularly Sandy at Rogie Farm for making us so welcome and for all their help preparing for the ride. [Lovely Highland stallion, Sandy!].
Thanks to Pat (admin), Fiona (trot up), Annie and Elspeth (start / Finish) and all others who pitched in. And sorry to Julie & Billy for being sent up the 'tyre' track to be left there all on their own!
A big welcome to the first timers who came along to see what it was all about and had fun by all accounts. Also great to see some faces from the past coming back again.
The first ride of the season. And after the mildest and driest February for years - unlike last year (remember all that snow?!). So the 'all weather' forestry tracks were firm with stony sections - all thanks to the Snowman Rally apparently!
17 riders enjoyed a lovely day despite the forecast of snow showers. The 11 km intro ride took the track up by the river, past Rogie Farm and round the loop under the railway. A low bridge needed care, but there was a mounting block for the climbing-back-on-my-horse-from-the-ground ... challenged.
Those who went on to complete the 22km ride round to Achterneed were rewarded with great views of Ben Wyvis to the north and enjoyable riding (after a horrible stony bit with another mounting block) on a rising path and track above Strathpeffer.
Despite the firm and stony ground so early in the season, everyone reported having a great ride.
First Highland Branch endurance ride of the season! You never know how it’s going to go. Will the horses be fit after the winter? Who will show up with a brand spanking new horsebox? Really, it’s an indicator of how the rest of the year’s going to be and I can tell you, were off to a good start. David and Annie Tidmarsh were the ride organisers and probably the funniest thing I’ve ever seen is David rambling around on his scooter, Elmer Fudd hunting hat firmly in place, pulling everything together. Well, what can I say. The whole thing ran nice and smoothly. An encouraging number of riders showed up and even some new endurance enthusiasts - we love new members!.....Almost as much as we love nice weather! Speaking of the weather; it was wonderful and not a midge in sight. Overall it was a superb day and thanks to all who came. Unfortunately, I was not riding, but with Annie keeping me well supplied with coffee and chocolate, I was more than happy to help out. To David and Annie, well done for getting us off to a great start. Elspeth Hayes – Junior Committee Member
Thanks to David and his many helpers (Pat, Ellie, Fiona, Annie and whoever else I've forgotten) for a lovely ride at Contin today with perhaps a few excitements! To Breagha and Leanne for the company - we make a good posse! Candy Cameron.
